 Act Three

Later that same day.  This time, we move inside Jack’s country estate and spend the last 23 minutes of the play in the drawing room.  Jack, It turns out does not know who his parents are.  He was, as he explains, “found” in a handbag at Victoria Station, the Brighton line. Both men finally admit they are not named Ernest and set about to put things right.  The farce roars into full tilt here and a “perfect” resolution and very funny ending brings everyone peace at last.  Enjoy.

Act Two

A few days later, 1895.  The location is Jack Worthing’s country estate, where his ward Cecily tends the gardens and is tutored by a rather befuddled older woman;  Miss Prism.  There also is the estate’s chaplain, Dr. Chasuble, who has a crush on Miss Prism.  Into this country splendor, comes:  First Algernon, pretending to be Jack’s older brother Ernest.  Secondly, in comes Jack; shocked to see Algernon there posing as his imaginary brother.  Finally Gwendolyn arrives and she and Cecily duke it out over a man named Ernest, who simply doesn’t exist.  Algy claims to be Ernest.  And so does Jack.  They do so because both girls insist that they can marry no man, unless his name is Ernest.  But….the course of true love never did run smooth….

Act One

The year is 1895, London England, on the brink of the Edwardian era (1901-1910).  Yet today, the world is firmly Victorian.   In Act One, you’ll meet Algernon, his friend Jack, Jack’s paramour Gwendolyn and Gwendolyn’s Wagnerian mother, Lady Bracknell.  Algy’s butler, Lane, moves in and out of the action offering food and a sly, cynical critique.
